KCE, 'Knowledge Centre for Energy-related research', is a multidisciplinary expertise centre affiliated to the Thomas More University and the University of Leuven. The centre is located in Geel, a small city near Antwerp (Belgium).
The KCE research group consists of 20 professional researchers. Their different background (theoretical and practical) and their different expertise (thermal, electrical, ICT, electronics, construction, agricultural…) make an integral approach to energy issues possible.
KCE’s research mainly revolves around the analysis, control and optimization of various energy systems in buildings. The goal is to guarantee interaction with user behavior through effective management of systems like CHP's, heat pumps, PV-installations, fuel cells…
Our goal is to successfully integrate different technologies. The integration should be profitable for all parties: the building, the (surrounding) systems and the user. The user is a vital link in this integration. He/she has an impact on the overall system.
We apply different techniques to reach our goals. We work from an electrical point of view (demand side management, domotica, development of applications and interfaces) as well as from a thermal-structural and micro-economic point of view (cost-optimum calculations, influence of user behavior, rebound, hydraulic balancing).
