KCE, the 'Knowledge Centre for Energy-related research' is a multidisciplinary research group affiliated to Thomas More University College and University of Leuven and physically located near Antwerp (Belgium)
KCE is a team of 20 co-workers with a wide range of expertise: thermal, electrical, ICT, electronics, construction, agricultural... and this both from a theoretical and a practical background. This team allows for an integrated approach to energy challenges in buildings.
Research activities of KCE include the analysis, control and optimization of various energy systems at the level of buildings. Starting point here is to ensure the comfort and interaction with the user behavior through effective management of these systems (including cogeneration, heat pumps, photovoltaic systems, fuel cells,...)
Integration of technologies, taking into account the interaction with the surrounding system, the building and the user.
There is a clear focus on the active role of the user and his impact on the global system. Both from electrical point of view (demand side management, automation, development of applications and interfaces), and from thermal-structural and micro-economic perspective (cost optimum calculations, influence of user behavior, rebound, hydraulic balancing).
Both the organisation and visualization of measurements, building simulaties and developing useful tools form our core activities.
